Growing radish
The first time we grew radishes we were surprised at how easy it was
and how quickly they grew. In fact we were not so much surprised. We were
flabbergasted. In less than one month we had sowed, harvested and eaten
our first home grown radish. Incredible stuff.
Radishes come in all shapes, sizes and colours. The most common though
are the round red radishes eaten fresh in salads (which we grew) and the
cylindrical radishes used in cooking.
Growing conditions
-
Radishes are very versatile, growing year round in all but the coolest
climates.
-
They prefer a slightly shaded aspect. Avoid growing them in full
sun during summer.
-
Radishes like a loose soil rich in organic matter, preferably manured
last season.
-
In a 4 bed rotation system radishes
are grown with other root crops.
Garden care
-
Directly sow the seeds where your radishes will grow.
-
Radishes can germinate as quick as 3-5 days after sowing.
-
Here's a hint. When sowing carrots mix in some radish seeds. The
radishes will pop up fast, showing the drill where you sowed. This
helps your weeding. And they'll be harvested only a week or two after
the carrots have germinated. This will give the carrots plenty of
room to grow.
-
There really isn't too much more to say about looking after radishes.
You sow, they grow. Everything happens so quickly.
