Previous months in Cork, Ireland
With Pat Walsh
2002
September
The month of September, a busy time in the veg patch, all the crops
are coming to harvest.
I've began to pull the crop of beetroot on a week by week basis,
I pick basically two weeks supply, I pickle the beetroot with the
following process. Boil the beetroot for approximately 100 min,
allow to cool, and then for every 1 litre of malt vinegar, add 3
table spoons of sugar, 4 table spoons of salt and stir. Sterilize
the Jars by placing them in the oven for 40 min, I then cut the
beetroot and pour the malt mixture over , and hey presto ,months
and months of beetroot.
The summer months in Ireland this year were a bit of a disaster,
as we would say typical Irish weather; Rain, rain and more rain
but this was more severe than most years; many a good vegetable
gardener bust. My carrots this year...wiped out, 3 plantings gone,
but now the carrots that I sew in July are coming. My only fear
is that they won't reach maturity .
Rabbits are the main enemy to the lettuces and cabbages, driving
me mad, I compare then to Gorilla warfare, they get in at the cover
of night, do the maximum damage then retreat back to the cover of
the burrows to return later the night to do the same thing again.
I have netting but they seem to burrow new holes each night: does
anyone know of a method of keeping them out?
The 'spuds' (potatoes) are ready, I planted 3 different varieties
, British queens, Kerr pinks and Golden wonder the queens as we
would say are "Balls of Flower". But I have noticed that
some pest is boring into some of them , does anyone know what this
is? I will hopefully provide pictures next time of correspondence.
Till next time "Keep turning the soil"
